Big Hero 6 Movie Review – In Theaters TODAY!!! #BigHero6Event

Today is the Big Day, as Big Hero 6 hits theaters EVERYWHERE today!!! It’s a great day for me, but an even better day for my children who have not seen the movie yet but are totally geeked about going to see it.  So excited that they both wore their Big Hero 6 Shirts to school today! (Oh and please pardon my son, but he’s the kid that will be bouncing at school all day, because he is anxious for our movie night tonight – smile)

Now if you have been following along you know that myself along with 24 other bloggers were invited to LA from 11/2 to 11/5 to attend some very special Big Hero 6 activities.  We were also invited to attend the Red Carpet Premiere, where I have to say I think I was Pretty Divalicious.  Well after walking the Red Carpet, we were able to actually view the movie…and well let’s just say as always with any Disney movie, Big Hero 6 brought about a roller coaster of emotions.  What is Big Hero 6 about?  Here’s a snippet of the press release:

From Walt Disney Animation Studios, the team behind “Frozen” and “Wreck-It Ralph,” comes “Big Hero 6,” an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax (voice of Scott Adsit), a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada (voice of Ryan Potter). When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago (voice of Jamie Chung), neatnik Wasabi (voice of Damon Wayans Jr.), chemistry whiz Honey Lemon (voice of Genesis Rodriguez) and fanboy Fred (voice of T.J. Miller). Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called “Big Hero 6.”

Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring breathtaking action with all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Big Hero 6” is directed by Don Hall (“Winnie the Pooh”) and Chris Williams (“Bolt”), and produced by Roy Conli (“Tangled”). The film hits theaters in 3D TODAY!!!

So as you know I am honest in all of my reviews, first glance of the preview my thoughts were “Yep its cute, that’s a cute character, but uhm probably not my cup of tea – the kids will like it though.”  In fact it took my son to take interest in the previews for me to really start paying attention to them.  You see my 5 year old is the big Marvel fan in the house and while I love Marvel Comics myself, I am more so into the Avengers and all the action behind Marvel.  I like the “traditional super powers”, HOWEVER being a mommy means that I have to take interest in what my kids like – even if it’s not the traditional characters that I personally like.  Well, it’s amazing how this balloon like character with a face made of 2 dots and one line just made my heart melt.

The Diva’s Thoughts on Big Hero 6:

Of all the super hero movies that Disney has made Big Hero 6 is one that many fans can relate to.  When you think of traditional Super Heroes, you think of special powers you think of these elaborate weapons and you think of these super amazing abilities that are beyond this world. What you don’t think of, is that everyday and everywhere that you look – there is someone around you that is honing and utilizing their true super power….The gift of KNOWLEDGE!!!!

In Big Hero 6 the main character Hiro (voiced by Ryan Potter) endures a hardship, his parents passed and then he tragically loses his older brother in an unfortunate event.  Left with no one other than his Aunt Cass (voiced by Maya Rudolph), he discovers that his brother actually left a piece of himself behind with an invention known as a Personal Healthcare Consultant called BayMax (voiced by Scott Adsit).  BayMax initially appears as this clueless robotic character that does just the cutest, but most awkward things (due to his size), but in all actuality he isn’t clueless at all and his actions make him even more lovable and huggable.

As a child who suffered the loss of a loved one (my mother) at an early age, I think Disney did a phenomenal job at addressing the loss of life without allowing it to over power the tone of the movie.  I think they did an amazing job at conveying that death is apart of life and so is the grieving process, as you will see the pivotal scene in which BayMax appears, it is when Hiro is grieving the loss of his brother Tadashi (voiced by Daniel Henney) – that Hiro learns it’s going to be okay.

As with life, you will grieve but there are things in life that will make you see the brighter side of things and help you move past your pain to better cope with it, and that’s what BayMax ends up representing for Hiro in the movie.  He becomes Hiro’s brighter side to life and he helps Hiro realize that there is a lot more left to life, even though things seemed bleak at the time.

Big Hero 6 also touches on the importance of friendships and being there for one another, we see that in the relationship that is formed between Hiro and his brothers classmates (Fred, Honey Lemon, Go Go & Wasabi).   Throughout the movie these characters support Hiro in his accomplishments, during his time of grieving and even come together with him to bring down the villain Yokai in the movie.  And they do it with their own “SUPER POWERS”.

Speaking of Super Powers, that brings me to back to what I mentioned earlier, about the gift of knowledge being a super power!!!! Here’s another reason why Big Hero 6 is a great movie, it embraces the fact that no matter what color you are (notice the characters are from all walks of life) if you apply yourself, your knowledge is your super power.  Through your knowledge you can embrace your super powers and define your destiny, you just have to “think outside of the box” and for the Divas you just have to “Woman Up”.  Oh and yes, Disney majorly empowered the two main divas of the film Go Go (voiced by Jamie Chung) and Honey Lemon (voiced by Genesis Rodriguez) to show the viewers that you can be cute, sassy, divalicious and smart.  Your knowledge is your super power!!!

Big Hero 6 is definitely family friendly and a film you can take everyone to see, I do suggest that you bring a few tissues as there are some parts that will make you shed a tear or two.  Big Hero 6 is now showing in theaters across the U.S., so why not “Woman Up” or “Man Up” and take your family to check it out.
